Q'alel Achij

El lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 204n364) explica el nombre del uno de los 20 nombramientos de los Ajpop y Q'alel después de la división de los pueblos mayas en Chulimal. Según apunta Colop: "El Q'alel Achij ser´ía el comandante general y no de linaje por su identificaci´ón con los achij 'guerreros.'"

Anthropologist Allen J. Christenson (2007: 284n817) glosses the title of one of the 20 officers elevated by the Ajpops and Q'alels after the division of Maya people in Chulimal. He writes: "Achij is 'man' but may also refer to 'warriors,' as in this case. Basseta lists this title as 'capitan.' This office and those that follow are likely military ranks," referring to Rajpop Achij, Rajtz'alam Achij, and Utza'm Achij.
