El lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 35) traduce la palabra q'ol como "incienso." En cambio, el traductor anglófono prefiere "resina" para hablar de la sustancia sagrada.
Anthropologist Allen J. Christenson (2007: n101) explains that q'ol "is tree sap, the most common source of incense among the Maya. This word most commonly refers to pine resin incense, although it may be used for other types as well." Whereas Christenson translates the term as "resin," K'iche' linguist Sam Colop (2008: 35) prefers "incense."
