El tambor y el chamcham

Aunque los autores k'iche' típicamente usan q'ojom (cohom en la ortografía colonial del padre Ximénez) para decir "tambor," aquí observamos que se usa la palabra "chamcham," el cual término parece tener cierta calidad de onomatopeya. Conforme al lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 186n306), a quien cita al diccionario de Coto, "puede interpretarse como un pequeño tambor, porque es improbable que sea 'tambor' en virtud que antiguamente la palabra para este instrumento era q'ojom que ahora se utiliza para decir marimba." Por la diferencia en el tamaño del señalado instrumento, el sonido del chamcham tendría que ser diferente de el del tambor.

Although the K'iche' authors of the Popol Wuj typically use q'ojom (cohom, in Ximénez's colonial orthograph) to say "drum," here they use "chamcham," a term that seems to carry some measure of onomatopoeic quality. According to K'iche' linguist Sam Colop (2008: 186n303), who cites the colonial dictionary of father Tomás de Coto, chamcham can be read as a "small drum," although its sound and size would have been different from the drums mentioned elsewhere in the text.
