Xmukur

Xmukur, tal como lo explica el sabio k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 88n134), "El texto k'iche' dice Xmucur que, conforme al diccionario de Pantaleón de Guzmán, quiere decir 'la tórtola'. En k'iche' contemporáneo y según hablantes de Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, a esta ave se le nombra ahora Xbuqur." Por tal razón en la traducción española del texto Colop (2008: 88) escribe el nombre de la tórtola como "Xmuqur". No obstante, en la edición k'iche', el mismo autor (1999: 81) escribe "Xmukur." Estas diferencias morfológicas tal vez indican cómo la ortografía k'iche' ha cambiado en los últimos 20 años o cómo los hablantes k'iche' del departamento de Sololá, donde se encuentra el publo de Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, varian en su pronunciación y representación fonética con respecto a los hablantes de otras zonas.

El erudito maya Allen J. Christenson (2007: 149) traduce a xmukur como “la tórtola” mientras que Dennis Tedlock (1996) prefiere “paloma de luto.”

Xmukur, as K’iche’ scholar Sam Colop (2008: 88n134) explains, “The K’iche’ text says Xmucur which, according to the dictionary made by Pantaleón de Guzmán, means ‘the turtledove.” In contemporary K’iche’ and according to speakers from Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, this bird’s name is now Xbuqur.” For this reason, in his Spanish translation, Colop (2008: 88) writes the turtledove’s name as “Xmuqur.” Nevertheless, in his K’iche’ edition, Colop (1999: 81) writes “Xmukur.” These morphological differences could possibly indicate that the K’iche’ orthography has changed in the last 20 years, or, alternatively, they could suggest that the K’iche’ speakers from the Sololá Department, where the town of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán is located, vary in their pronunciation and their phonetic representation with respect to speakers from other zones.

Mayanist scholars Allen J. Christenson (2007: 149) translates xmukur as "Turtle Dove" whereas Dennis Tedlock (1996) prefers "mourning dove."
