Tz'aqol, Bitol | "El críador"

En el texto k'iche' aquí se lee: "que /he cut v tihtobexic chic vinac /ꜩac vinac bit cumal ꜩacol /bitol alom, qaholom," lo que sería, en la ortografía contemporánea del investigador k'iche' Sam Colop (1999: 30), "k'eje k'ut utijob'exik chik winaq Tz'aq / winaq b'it kumal Tz'aqol/ B'itol; Alom, / K'ajolom." Aunque claramente se señala cuatro deidades, cabe notar que el padre dominico Francisco Ximénez (1666-1729) reduce el grupo cuatropartito a una sola figura: "el críador." Esta reducción semántica e ideológica en la columna española presente varios retos tecnólogicos para la codificación. Hemos intentado conservar la diversidad sagrada del texto original con esta nota y con las prácticas de la codificación en sí, por ejemplo con el uso de dos etiquetas: <rs ana="TZ'AQOL">el</rs> <rs ana="BITOL">críador</rs>. Entendemos que es una solución imperfecta y esperamos encontrar una respuesta adecuada con la ayuda de la comunidad.

In the K'iche' original, we find "que /he cut v tihtobexic chic vinac /ꜩac vinac bit cumal ꜩacol /bitol alom, qaholom," or, in the contemporary orthography of K'iche' scholar Sam Colop (1999: 30), "k'eje k'ut utijob'exik chik winaq Tz'aq / winaq b'it kumal Tz'aqol/ B'itol; Alom, / K'ajolom." In his literal poetic edition, Mayanist scholar Allen J. Christenson (2003: 26) translates the passage into English as "Thus its being attempted again people framed, / People shaped, / By Framer, / Shaper, / She Who Has Borne Children, / He Who Has Begotten Sons." It is clear from the K'iche' text and from Christenson's translation that four figures are invoked. In his Spanish-language translation, though, Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez (1666-1729) reduces the four-part structure of this divine invocation into a single figure: "el críador" (the creator). Ximénez's interventions create numerous challenges for textual encoding. We have attempted to use digital tools to reveal the history of those interventions, signaled in the margins with notes like these. We have also done so to the extent possible with our code. Because Ximénez is forced to use two words in Spanish, "el" and "críador," we have encoded each one with the name of one of the K'iche' deities, such that our code reads <rs ana="TZ'AQOL">el</rs> <rs ana="BITOL">críador</rs>. We find this to be an imperfect solution and we hope to find a better one with input from this community of readers.
