Señala el lingüista k'iche' Sam Colop (2008: 252fn339) que "Este nombre proviene del náhuatl, tepetl, 'montaña' (Kartunnen, 1992), y -po: l, 'grande' (Campbell, 1983)." El antropólogo Allen J. Christenson (2007: 293fn849) está de acuerdo, notando “Este nombre es probablemente derivado del náhuatl tepeuh (conquistador, majestad) y pul/pol (grande), dando la lectura ‘Conquistador Grande.’ La palabra K’iche’ tepewal es ‘gloria, majestad, soberanía.’ Alternativamente, el nombre puede derivarse del náhuatl tepe (montaña) con su sufijo aumentativo pul/pol (gran, grande) que da como resultado 'Gran Montaña’ (Campbell 1983, 85)."

The Quiché word tepewal is 'glory, majesty, sovereignty.' Alternatively, the name may be derived from the Nahua tepe (mountain) with an augmentative suffix pul/pol (great, large) yielding 'Great Mountain' (Campbell 1983, 85)."
