"La isla española," hoy conocido como La Española (en castellano) o Hispaniola (en latín), es una isla caribeña compartida por las naciones de Haití y la República Dominicana. En sus escolios al Popol Wuj, el padre Ximénez observa que La Española fue el sitio del primer debate en el imperio español sobre la humanidad del pueblo indígena.
